(AP) ? Investors seemed to be in a holding pattern Monday, unwilling to send the market definitively up or down. Indexes hopped between small gains and losses and investors waited for clarity on third-quarter earnings and the presidential election.

Developments that could move the market are coming soon. Yahoo, a proxy for how the tech industry is doing, will report earnings after the market closes. Bellwether companies like Apple and Procter & Gamble report later this week. The government releases its report on third-quarter economic growth on Friday. And two weeks from now, the U.S. holds its presidential election.

"It's very quiet out there," said David Katz, principal and senior portfolio strategist at WeiserMazars Wealth Advisors in New York. "A lot of that is just the election, or Monday night football ? one or the other."

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 dipped when the market opened, then struggled for direction. The moves were small.

The Dow was down 14 points to 13,324 at noon. The S&P 500 was down two at 1,431 and the Nasdaq composite index inched up six points to 3,012.

Company earnings signaled that the economy isn't at full bore, though investors' reactions were mixed.

Hasbro, the toymaker behind brands like My Little Pony and Transformers, said that sales for boys and preschool were less than it had hoped. But the company's results beat analysts' expectations, and the stock inched up 24 cents to $39.29.

Clothing maker VF Corp., whose brands include The North Face and Wrangler, slipped after its revenue fell short of analysts' estimates. The stock fell $5.62 to $161.15

Caterpillar, the world's largest construction and mining equipment company, cut its profit and revenue predictions for the year, saying the global economy is weaker than it previously thought. But profit and revenue both increased, and the stock rose 99 cents to $84.85.

SunTrust Banks slipped after announcing its quarterly results. Earnings were sharply higher, but that was largely because the bank sold shares it owned in Coca-Cola. The Atlanta-based bank wrestled with higher expenses as well as low interest rates, which can crimp the profit banks make from lending out money.

The markets just got through the first peak week of third-quarter earnings reports. On Friday, disappointing results from Microsoft, General Electric and McDonald's surprised traders and pushed U.S. stocks lower.

While most companies have pulled in better-than-expected earnings, investors now are more interested in how they're doing on revenue. Revenue can give a more accurate picture of how a company is performing, because earnings can vary widely on items like accounting charges and cost-cutting.

Katz described companies' third-quarter revenue results as "fair" and said the U.S. economy is "slow and steady."

"It is at a snail's pace," he said. "But it's certainly better than what we had."

Of the roughly 100 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported third-quarter results so far, 70 percent have beat analysts' estimates for earnings, according to John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet. But only 42 percent have beat estimates for revenue. That's the lowest since the first quarter of 2009, when the stock market hit its Great Recession lows.

Ancestry.com, the genealogy website, jumped after announcing it will be bought by European private equity firms. The stock popped $2.28 to $31.46. The buyers had offered $32 per share.

In other trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.80 percent from 1.76 percent late Friday. The euro was worth $1.30, little changed from Friday, and energy prices fell slightly. Crude oil fell 66 cents to $89.78 a barrel in New York.

Greater parental stress linked to children's obesity, fast food use, reduced activity

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Parents with a higher number of stressors in their lives are more likely to have obese children, according to a new study by pediatric researchers. Furthermore, when parents perceive themselves to be stressed, their children eat fast food more often, compared to children whose parents feel less stressed.

"Stress in parents may be an important risk factor for child obesity and related behaviors," said Elizabeth Prout-Parks, M.D., a physician nutrition specialist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who led a study published online October 22 in the November issue of Pediatrics. "The severity and number of stressors are important."

Among the parental stressors associated with childhood obesity are poor physical and mental health, financial strain, and leading a single-parent household, said Prout-Parks. Although previous researchers had found a connection between parental stress and child obesity, the current study covered a more diverse population, both ethnically and socioeconomically, than did previous studies.

The study team suggested that interventions aimed at reducing parental stress and teaching coping skills may assist public health campaigns in addressing childhood obesity.

The researchers analyzed self-reported data from 2,119 parents and caregivers who participated in telephone surveys in the 2006 Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Health Survey/Community Health Database, conducted in Philadelphia and neighboring suburbs. The households contained children aged 3 to 17, among whom 25 percent were obese. Among the variables included were parental stressors, parent-perceived stress, age, race, health quality and gender of children, adult levels of education, BMI, gender, sleep quality, and outcomes such as child obesity, fast-food consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, and physical activity.

Of the measured stressors, single-parent households had the strongest relationship with child obesity, while financial stress had the strongest relationship for a child not being physically active. Unexpectedly, neither parent stressors nor parent-perceived stress was associated with decreased fruit and vegetable consumption by their children.

However, this study was the first to find an association between parent-perceived stress and more frequent fast-food consumption by children. Fast food, often containing high quantities of fat and sugar, is an important risk factor for obesity and child health. The researchers speculated that parents experiencing stress may buy more fast food for the family, to save time or reduce the demands of meal preparation. The authors also suggest that actual and perceived parental stress may result in less supervision of children, who may then make unhealthy food and activity choices.

"Although multiple stressors can elicit a 'stressor pile-up,' causing adverse physical health in children, parent's perception of their general stress level may be more important than the actual stressors," the authors write.

Future research on child obesity should further examine other family behaviors and community factors not available in the current study, conclude the authors. In addition, "Clinical care, research and other programs might reduce levels of childhood obesity by developing supportive measures to reduce stressors on parents," said Prout-Parks. "Teaching alternative coping strategies to parents might also help them to reduce their perceived stress."

Spain's Rajoy gets mixed message in regional votes

MADRID, Spain (Reuters) - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was given a boost for his austerity drive with an election victory in his home region of Galicia on Sunday, but wins for nationalist parties in the Basque Country could prove a headache for his centre-right government.

The election in Galicia, where austerity steps were taken by the People's Party even before Rajoy took national office one year ago, had been seen as a referendum on the Spanish government's handling of the euro zone crisis.

The victory there gives the prime minister some breathing space after polls showing him losing support amid massive demonstrations against spending cuts in public services and successive tax hikes.

Rajoy's People's Party easily retained its absolute majority and government in Galicia with 41 seats in the regional parliament compared with 18 seats for the Socialist Party and 16 seats for two nationalist parties.

That was three more seats than three years ago and two more than predicted by opinion polls for Alberto Nunez Feijoo, the PP's regional leader and a possible heir to the PP leader.

European officials and analysts said Rajoy wanted to wait until after the election to request further European aid because he feared lenders' conditions, such as a reform of the pension system, could anger voters.

The Spanish prime minister, who received a euro zone pledge in June of up to 100 billion euros to recapitalize banks, said on Friday he still had not decided whether to request a sovereign bailout. Senior euro zone officials told Reuters they expected an aid request to be made next month.

Spain has fallen into its second recession since 2009 and the International Monetary Fund forecasts the economy will contract by 1.3 percent next year. Unemployment is 24.6 percent.

In the short term, Rajoy will benefit from the collapse of the Socialists in both Galicia and the Basque Country.

The Socialists had hoped for a repeat of regional elections in Andalusia in March where they lost to the PP but managed to form a coalition government with another left-wing party. But Sunday's results may re-open a leadership war in the Socialist Party, which ruled in Spain from 2004 to 2011.

RESISTENCE

In the Basque Country, the outcome of the vote, as expected, was influenced by central government attempts to reduce provincial power.

The nationalist PNV (Partido Nacionalista Vasco) won with 27 seats, compared with 21 seats for Bildu, a pro-independence party, 16 seats for the Socialist Party and 10 seats for the PP.

It is not yet clear who the Basque nationalist PNV will have to rely on to form a government. Political analysts said it may prefer to team up with the Socialist Party rather than with Bildu, which many see as linked to Basque separatist group ETA.

Although the PNV has said it would prioritize the economy over autonomy issues, the new political map of the region as well as an expected victory of nationalist parties in another regional vote in Catalonia on November 25 will likely fuel more resistance to Rajoy's policies locally.

Spain's 17 autonomous communities manage their own budgets and are responsible for health and education policies, among other areas of public spending.

Opposition parties have accused the government of using the crisis to claw back powers from the provinces, whose overspending was partly to blame for the failure of the country to meet its deficit targets last year.

The central government has offered funding to the regions in exchange for more control over local finances. So far, eight regions, including Catalonia, have said they would tap the liquidity line. The Basque Country is not expected to do so.

Coronary angioplasty improves cardiac arrest survival

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Coronary angioplasty improves survival in all patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest, according to research presented at the Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012. The study was presented by Dr Annamaria Nicolino from the Santa Corona General Hospital in Pietra Ligure, Italy.

The Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012 is the first annual meeting of the newly launched Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). It takes place during 20-22 October in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Istanbul Lufti Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC).

Out of hospital cardiac arrest is a leading cause of mortality and acute coronary occlusion is the leading cause of cardiac arrest. It is well known that when an electrocardiogram (ECG) shows that a patient has ST elevation, primary angiography must be done as soon as possible. If severe coronary disease is found, coronary angioplasty with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is performed to open the blocked vessel.

But Dr Nicolino said: "There is controversy about what to do when a patient with out of hospital cardiac arrest has a normal ECG that does not show ST elevation. ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines are inconclusive -- they say to consider performing coronary angiography but they don't say 'do it' or 'don't do it'."

She added: "Some previous studies have found that if the ECG is normal (no ST elevation) the patient can still have severe coronary disease and therefore needs a coronary angiography, followed by coronary angioplasty, to clear the blocked vessel."

The current study aimed to discover whether performing urgent coronary angiography, and PCI if required, would improve survival in all patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest (both those with ST elevation and those without).

The study included 70 patients who had out of hospital cardiac arrest between 2006 and 2009. Successful urgent coronary angiography and PCI improved hospital survival in all patients with acute coronary syndrome. The treatment increased hospital survival rates in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) from 51% to 83% (p=0.003) and in non-STEMI (NSTEMI) patients from 55% to 81% (p=0.004).

"In our study, a successful urgent coronary angioplasty improved hospital survival in patients with STEMI and NSTEMI," said Dr Nicolino. "All patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest, if there is no non-cardiac cause, must have an urgent coronary angiography followed by coronary angioplasty if there is coronary disease."

Non-cardiac causes of cardiac arrest which should be ruled out before performing coronary angiography are trauma, brain haemorrhage and metabolic problems such as severe hypoglycaemia.

Dr Nicolino added: "ECG results can be misleading -- we found that ECG detected just one-third of acute coronary syndrome in NSTEMI patients. This means that even if the ECG is not showing ST elevation, you cannot rule out an acute coronary syndrome. Coronary angiography should be performed urgently to see if there is any acute coronary disease which needs treatment with PCI."

Post-resuscitation neurologic injury (PNI) was the biggest complication. This can occur if resuscitation is not performed early enough, since the brain's blood supply stops during cardiac arrest. The 32.8% of patients who had PNI were at the greatest risk of death. Early signs of PNI were associated with underuse of coronary angioplasty and PCI.

Provided there was no neurological injury, MI patients who had angioplasty after cardiac arrest achieved the same one-year survival rates as patients with MI alone.

The first heart rhythm was a ventricular fibrillation (VF) or a ventricular tachycardia (VT) in 62% of patients. Most of these patients had an acute coronary syndrome (STEMI or NSTEMI). The incidence of VF and VT was the same in STEMI and NSTEMI patients. "For many years we have thought that patients with STEMI have a greater arrhythmic risk than NSTEMI patients," said Dr Nicolino. "But we found that both STEMI and NSTEMI patients are at high risk of arrhythmias."

She added: "If the first recorded rhythm is a VF or a VT an acute coronary syndrome is highly probable and it's important to perform a coronary angiography immediately without waiting for a diagnosis of infarction (using an enzyme test)."

Dr Nicolino concluded: "Patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest must be managed by cardiologists, intensive care doctors and anaesthesiologists. This team can save the brain from injury using cooling therapy, and save the heart and life of the patient using coronary angioplasty."

Gardening For Fruit With the Kids At Home | Green Prophet

signs for fruitsA few months ago together with three enthusiastic family kids I started a gardening experiment:?growing fruits out of the seeds we collected from fruits we ate, just planting it in the backyard.?

We used tomato, watermelon and melon seeds, the kids even made signs for each. Though all seeds sprouted, the watermelon seedling was first to die on us, followed surprisingly by the tomato, which managed to flower and grow one small fruit but stopped developing and died soon after.?

The biggest success belongs to the melon, it kept growing and fast, flowering yellow and even bearing several fruits ? one of the flowers which was pollinated by bees kept growing into this strange looking fruit.

melon flowering gardenmelon growing garden

The important part of the process is teaching kids via hand-on experience, starting from the basics of using food we eat to try produce new plants rendering the ?leftovers? as valuable material instead of ?garbage?, through the dedication that goes into growing things, including not getting the desired result but keep working at it nevertheless, the importance of bees and other insects and of course the agriculture process itself as opposed to fruits originate from the supermarket.

The ongoing fruit experiment brought the wish to grow more useful plants which led to the adjacent herb patch also attended to by the kids and adults. The herbs were purchased at a local nursery and this time the soil was also enriched with compost and humus to allow better results ? and indeed so far it is growing nicely.

herb garden
The next probable step is spacing between rows of herbs,?and following a request of one 9 years old kid,? build a small improvised ?greenhouse? for the cooler season as Autumn and Winter approaching.

As most people live in cities, I?d like to stress you do not need a large area or a back yard ? this can be done just as well using a big container placed on your balcony?(or try the GreenBo planters), and if you would like to add an even bigger advantage to the whole project, create a garden with your neighbours contributing to a better community and sustainable living.
The obvious benefits worth a lot more than a pack of parsley and basil!

lines and colors :: a blog about drawing, painting, illustration, comics ...

Cliff Childs
Cliff Childs is a concept artist and illustrator based in Los Angeles. He studied at the Otis College of Art and Design and is, I believe, currently working with Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Childs has an approach to concept environments that stresses atmosphere, both in the sense of atmospheric perspective and in terms of mood. Even in his renderings of daylight scenes, he plays with visual sensations of moisture laden air, giving his designs a palpable feeling of distance and temperature.

He also works his lighting in a theatrical manner, focusing attention with spotlighted effects, controlled passages of color and suggestions of texture.

In addition to his concept work, Childs has done illustrations for the Magic: The Gathering gaming card series.

I didn?t see any of the latter on his blog, but you will find a lot of his concept and personal work, including sketches from life in traditional media.

Childs?s work is on display as one of the artists represented in the Painting in Pixels: An Exhibition of Concept Art currently at the Riverside Art Museum (see my recent post).

Megan Fox, Brian Austin Green welcome son

Jason Merritt / Getty Images file

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green in January 2011.

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Megan Fox has transformed into one hot mama! The 26-year-old actress welcomed a baby boy last month, her first child with husband Brian Austin Green, E! News has exclusively confirmed.

What a couple of secret-keepers! Not that we're surprised.

The news did make its way to Fox's Facebook page on Wednesday, where the actress said Noah Shannon Green was born on Sept. 27. "He is healthy, happy, and perfect."

Megan was rocking clingy dresses throughout her pregnancy

Fox and Green also stayed entirely mum about their expectant status, which E! News exclusively reported in April.

But once the bump became apparent -- and that took some time?for the slender Fox -- the happy duo got with the program and offered up a sweet baby-on-board pictorial confirmation?for an obliging paparazzo.

Fox told Cosmopolitan?in April that she's "always been maternal" and that she wants "at least two, probably three kids."

The "Friends With Kids" actress and her "90210" beau tied the knot?in June 2010. Green also has a 10-year-old son, Kassius, from a previous relationship.

Unsuprisingly, there was no immediate comment from either actor's rep on their new addition, but as soon as we learn the details, we'll be sure to pass along.

Take a look back at the romance of Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

Facebook, Email Addresses And Advertisers - Business Insider

Facebook's new?Custom Audiences ad product allows advertisers to use your email address and phone numbers to target you with ads.

Basically, any company that already has an email list of its own customers can now take that list to Facebook, which will match it against a list of users who have those addresses. Those users then become ripe for targeting.

In a press release, AdParlor, a strategic preferred marketing partner (sPMP) for Facebook, announced that one of its large travel clients had successfully launched an email targeting campaign on Facebook that got a 25X return on investment from increased bookings, using the Custom Audiences tool to target their ads.

The tool was officially released to the public in September, and allows advertisers to use their CRM or non-Facebook contacts to target ads to Facebook users. The tool uses email addresses, phone numbers, and Facebook user IDs to match ads so advertisers can find the exact people they want to target.

This is how it works.

First, companies identify the groups of people they want to target through whatever type of CRM you use (Outlook, Salesforce, Gmail, an excel spreadsheet). Then, using Facebook's Power Editor (a Facebook tool for advertisers), advertisers input the contact information to find the individuals within the Facebook network.

Facebook "hashes" the data?(a process that ensures personal contact information is kept anonymous) and matches the data to create a custom Facebook audience for your ads. These people do NOT have to be fans of your brand page.

To flesh out the list, you can also overlay it with Facebook location and demographic targeting. For now, the service is free for Facebook brands.

According to AdParlor, their first campaign using the Custom Audience product seems to have worked. For every $1 the AdParlor's travel client spent on Facebook Advertising, the Custom Audience campaign generated $25 in room booking revenue. ?We are thrilled to see these results,? said Hussein Fazal, CEO of AdParlor. ?This is further proof that Facebook can innovate with their advertising products to drive ROI positive ad spend and we expect more companies to begin leveraging this new targeting feature.?

Stocks slip after Google earnings, jobless claims

(AP) ? A mixed batch of earnings and economic reports pulled the stock market lower on Thursday. Google plunged 9 percent after it accidentally released a weak earnings report hours ahead of schedule.

The Dow fell 16 points to 13,541 as of 2:30 p.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped five points to 1,459.

"This is a market that's waiting for a clear catalyst," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial. What investors most want, she said, is a sense of direction. They hope companies will lay out clearly where earnings and the economy are headed.

"We basically know what happened in the last quarter," Krosby said. "What we're looking for is what's next: Are we turning a corner? Will demand pick up at the end of the year?"

Google's stock dropped $68.19 to $687.30 before trading was suspended. The company's earnings, which fell far short of analysts' forecasts, were supposed to be released after the market closed.

Falling prices for Internet advertisements and a loss from Motorola Mobility weighed on Google's earnings. The company blamed the publisher R.R. Donnelley for filing a draft of its quarterly report. The publisher's stock lost 1 percent, or 14 cents, to $10.71.

Facebook, which also relies on Internet ads, took a turn lower after Google released results. Its stock fell 87 cents, to $19.00.

Google's fall helped tug the Nasdaq composite down 34 points to 3,070.

American Express reported quarterly revenue late Wednesday that fell short of Wall Street's expectations even though earnings were in line. Amex said card holders' rate of spending has slowed in recent months. Its stock lost $1.59 to $57.78.

Strong profits for the insurer Travelers sent its stock up 4 percent. The company said Thursday that claims from catastrophes plunged compared to the same quarter last year, which helped earnings double. Travelers' stock gained $2.78 to $74.16.

BB&T bank, Philip Morris International and Boston Scientific all fell after reporting results that fell short of forecasts. Microsoft is scheduled to post earnings after the market closes.

Analysts expect S&P 500 companies to say that overall earnings shrank in the third quarter, according to S&P Capital IQ. That would be the first drop in exactly three years.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits surged to a four-month high, a sharp rise from the previous week. The increase suggested rising layoffs, but the Labor Department pointed to technical reasons behind the swing, mainly delayed figures from one large state, California.

Better earnings from Johnson & Johnson and other companies, along with encouraging reports on industrial production and the housing market, have pushed the stock market higher this week. The Dow is up 1.6 percent and the S&P 500 index up 1.9 percent for the week.

In other trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note was 1.82 percent, the same as it was late Wednesday.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? EBay jumped $2.10 to $50.30 after posting better net income and sales late Wednesday, thanks to more revenue from its PayPal payments service and its online markets. The company also raised its full-year estimates for earnings and sales.

? Verizon Communications surged 99 cents to $45.71. The company said its wireless division, partially owned by Vodafone Group, signed up more customers in the quarter. Verizon said its customers also added more devices to its Share Everything plan.

Syria mediator warns conflict could consume Middle East

BEIRUT (Reuters) - International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said on Wednesday that Syria's civil war risked spreading across borders into an "all-consuming" conflict unless it was eventually addressed.

Brahimi, speaking after talks in Beirut, said he hoped this month's Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha offered a chance for both sides to cease fire and warned that the Middle East would suffer unless the violence was contained.

"This crisis cannot remain within Syrian borders indefinitely. Either it will be addressed or it will increase ... and be all-consuming," he said.

Brahimi has visited Sunni Muslim states which support rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad as well as Shi'ite Iran, Assad's strongest regional ally, in his search for a political solution to Syria's civil war

On Sunday he appealed to Iranian leaders to support a proposal for a ceasefire to mark Eid al-Adha. Speaking in Lebanon he said Syria's opposition had told him that any ceasefire by Assad's forces would be reciprocated immediately.

"We heard from everyone we met in the opposition, and everyone (else) we met that, if the government stops using violence 'We will respond to this directly'," he told reporters.

"We hope this will be a very small step that would save the Syrian people (the bloodshed) they are going through, because they are burying hundreds of people every day," he added.

Activists say more than 30,000 people have been killed in the fighting in Syria since the uprising against Assad's rule erupted in March last year. An April ceasefire brokered by Brahimi's predecessor, Kofi Annan, broke down within days as both rebel and government forces escalated their conflict.

"If the number of people buried during the Eid was reduced, perhaps this could be a start to bringing Syria back from the dangerous situation which it has slipped into... and we could talk to the parties inside and outside (Syria) to work towards helping the Syrian solving their problem," Brahimi said.

Computer models of Earth's climate change confirmed on Mars

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Computer models have accurately forecast conditions on Mars and are valid predictors of climate change on Earth, U.S. and French astronomers said on Tuesday.

These computer programs predicted Martian glaciers and other features on Earth's planetary neighbor, scientists found.

"Some public figures imply that modeling of global climate change on Earth is 'junk science,' but if climate models can explain features observed on other planets, then the models must have at least some validity," lead researcher William Hartmann of the Planetary Science Institute said in a statement.

The team's findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society's planetary sciences division in Reno, Nevada.

Some climate change skeptics, notably U.S. Senator James Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, dismiss human-spurred global warming as a hoax. Others accept that Earth's climate is changing, but discount a human cause. Still others, including Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, accept the idea of climate change, but maintain the science is inconclusive.

The science of climate change prediction is dependent in part on complex computer models that take into account multiple factors that influence Earth's climate, including the level of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Many such models have forecast the globally averaged temperature will rise by 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C) this century if greenhouse emissions continue at current levels.

Recent global temperature increases support these predictions. On Monday, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that September 2012 was tied for the warmest month on Earth in the modern record, and was the 331st consecutive month above the 20th century average.

MODELING MARTIAN SNOWS

Hartmann, a senior scientist at the nonprofit Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, said he and his team confirmed the earthly computer models' effectiveness by using them to forecast conditions on Mars.

New satellite observations of glaciers, ice flows and other features on the red planet showed that the models' predictions corresponded with what was on the Martian surface, Hartmann said in a telephone interview.

One key difference between Earth and Mars is their tilt, he said. Earth's axis is fixed, with very small variations, at 23.5 degrees, held steady by the gravitational pull of our moon. This tilt is responsible for changing seasons as Earth moves through the year, alternately tipping its northern and southern hemispheres toward the sun.

Mars lacks a big moon to stabilize its tilt, and its rotational axis can vary as much as 70 degrees toward the sun. When that happens, polar ice evaporates and puts moisture into the Martian atmosphere, which dumps snow, ice and ultimately glaciers in Mars' mid-latitudes. The last time this happened, astronomers say, was between 5 million and 20 million years ago.

Factoring in the planet's varying tilt, topography, atmosphere and other information, the climate models forecast specific regions for massive snowfalls, and the remnants of those snowfalls are right there, Hartmann said. So are ice flows and other features, viewed by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

"We do have a lot of public figures, in our country particularly, saying that the global climate modeling studies have very little value," Hartmann said. "If the global climate modeling people can run these models on Mars and we actually see things that come out of the model on another planet, then the climate modeling people must be doing something right."

Lopez, Kardashian to host 'The X Factor'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian Odom are officially joining "The X Factor."

After weeks of speculation, Fox announced Tuesday that the "Extra" host and the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" co-star will indeed host the second season of the talent competition. Lopez and Odom will first appear as hosts during the show's live broadcasts next month, the network said.

"The worst kept secret in Hollywood is out," said "X Factor" creator and judge Simon Cowell in a statement. "Mario and Khloe are our hosts. They will debut on our first live show in November, and I couldn't be happier."

British television personality Steve Jones served as the sole host for the first season of the U.S. edition of the show.

The addition of Lopez and Kardashian is the latest shift for the underperforming singing contest. Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joined Cowell and L.A. Reid on "The X Factor" judging panel at the start of the second season. The pair replaced Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.

"I'm very excited to be joining 'The X Factor' team," said Lopez, who has also hosted MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" for the past seven seasons. "I love the show, and I've been a big fan of Simon Cowell and the judges for a long time. Khloe and I have been friends for years, and I know we'll be a great team and have a blast."

The current second season of "X Factor" is earning solid ratings for Fox, but NBC's "The Voice" continues to perform better. Last week, 12.55 million people watched "The Voice," while "X Factor" was seen by 9.71 million, according to the Nielsen Co.

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is answering Republican criticism of the Obama administration's handling of last month's attack at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, saying she ? not the White House ? is responsible for security at all of America's diplomatic missions.

"I take responsibility," Clinton told CNN. "I'm in charge of the State Department's 60,000-plus people all over the world (at) 275 posts."

With only weeks before the presidential election, outrage has crystallized around Vice President Joe Biden's claim in last week's debate with Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan that "we weren't told" about requests for extra security at the consulate where assailants killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Congressional hearings revealed that the State Department was aware of, and rejected, several requests for increased security in Benghazi. Spokesmen for both the State Department and the White House took pains Friday to make clear that Biden's "we" referred to the White House, where such requests would not go.

Clinton backed up Biden's assertion. "The president and the vice president wouldn't be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals," she said Monday.

Clinton told Fox News Channel that "the decisions about security are made by security professionals. But we're going to review everything to be sure we're doing what needs to be done in an increasingly risky environment."

There are three separate investigations into the attack going on now: an FBI probe into the deaths of the four Americans, an independent inquiry by a panel appointed by Clinton and the congressional hearings.

Initial reports attributed the cause of the violent attack as one of a number of spontaneous demonstrations in several Muslim countries over a film produced in the U.S. that denigrated the Prophet Muhammad. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, insisted in on a number of Sunday talk shows that the investigation up to that point showed no indication of a planned attack. Within days, the White House reversed its position, saying new findings indicated the attack was intentional and coordinated.

"In the wake of an attack like this, in the fog of war, there's always going to be confusion," Clinton told CNN. "And I think it is absolutely fair to say that everyone had the same intelligence. Everyone who spoke tried to give the information that they had. As time has gone on, that information has changed. We've gotten more detail, but that's not surprising. That always happens."

She added, "What I want to avoid is some kind of political gotcha or blame game."

Three Republican senators said Clinton's claim was "a laudable gesture," but they put the responsibility for the Benghazi attack and what they called "an escalating pattern of attacks this year in Benghazi" squarely on President Barack Obama and his national security team.

"If the president was truly not aware of this rising threat level in Benghazi, then we have lost confidence in his national security team, whose responsibility it is to keep the president informed," Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire said in a statement released late Monday. "But if the President was aware of these earlier attacks in Benghazi prior to the events of September 11, 2012, then he bears full responsibility for any security failures that occurred."

Bloomberg News reported Sunday that Ambassador Stevens' father said he believes his son's death is being investigated adequately and said it would be "abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue."

Clinton agreed with the need to keep the Benghazi tragedy out of politics.

"I know that we're very close to an election," Clinton told CNN. "I want to just take a step back here and say from my own experience, we are at our best as Americans when we pull together. I've done that with Democratic presidents and Republican presidents."

Johnny Depp embarking on book imprint with Harper

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Johnny Depp is adding a new hat to his collection, as a publisher with the launch of a new book imprint in conjunction with Harper, the company said on Tuesday.

Depp, the Oscar-nominated actor known for films ranging from "Edward Scissorhands" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series to the recent "Dark Shadows," will focus on books that reflect his interests and passions, providing a home for "outspoken and visionary ideas and voices," HarperCollins said in a release.

Depp said in the release the new imprint would "deliver publications worthy of people's time, of people's concern. Publications that might ordinarily never have breached the parapet."

One of the titles under the new imprint, which is called Infinitum Nihil, will include "The Unraveled Tales of Bob Dylan," by author Douglas Brinkley and promises to set the record straight on countless Dylan issues. It is tentatively scheduled to be published in 2015.

"Johnny and I thought the Dylan book was the ideal way to inaugurate the Infinitum Nihil series," Brinkley said in the HarperCollins release. "Bob has been very warm and forthcoming with us. His music has inspired us both deeply since we were teenagers."

Depp and Brinkley have already collaborated in the past, co-writing the Grammy Award-nominated liner notes for the documentary, "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson."

Early next year the new imprint will publish another tome steeped in music history, folk singer Woody Guthrie's novel "House of Earth."

Guthrie finished the book in 1947 but never tried to have it published, and the manuscript remained in his archives. The book is set in the Texas panhandle of the 1930s amid the struggle between private citizens, banks and corporate interests.

Depp and Brinkley, author of the Walter Cronkite biography "Cronkite," will pen an essay to introduce the novel.
