Church will return violent games, toys to raise funds for shooting victims

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- In the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, many of us have been asking: What can we do to help?

A local priest says this can be a teachable moment for all of us and an opportunity to create change.

In times of crisis, Father Fred Daley says many turn to religion, seeking answers to a tragedy that seems unexplainable.

?Something has to be done, we cannot keep going in the direction we are going,? said Father Daley from All Saints Church in Syracuse. ?We live in a nation that?s seeped in violence and the reality is we teach our children violence with toys we give them and the television programs we show them.?

Father Daley says his parishioners at All Saints Church in Syracuse have felt helpless, asking what to do. He says parents have the power to make a change. He says that change begins with not giving our children violent toys and video games.

?If parents say no, manufacturers won't make them,? Father Daley said.

The church, located at 112 Lancaster Avenue, has set up collection baskets -- a place where parents can drop off violent toys and video games along with a receipt. The church will return them and use the money to help the Connecticut families impacted by the tragedy.

?This is just one way that all of us can do something to move in a new direction. Instead of the status quo, business as usual, it doesn't have to be this way,? Father Daley said.
