Plan to reduce County?s $310 million budget deficit to $45 million?
(Long Island, NY) Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano recently announced his $45 million Deficit Reduction Plan in an attempt to curb Nassau?s heavy debt to manageable levels without impacting resident property taxes, already among the highest in the nation.?
Following previous cost-cutting measures, which included the elimination of 100 County jobs and controversial cuts to County-funded public services and youth programs, Mangano announced that he is now downsizing an additional 200 positions, along with implementing other cost-cutting measures in an attempt to whittle down Nassau?s sizable $310 million debt to $45 million, as projected by Comptroller George Maragos earlier this month. ?
The Deficit Reduction Plan is intended to eliminate the projected debt and keep Nassau on the road to financial recovery while avoiding tax hikes for County residents, said Mangano. ?
?Families that work hard, play by the rules and live within their means deserve better than to be left with higher tax bills,? he said.? ?Today?s plan keeps Nassau?s fiscal recovery on track while protecting residents from a property tax hike.??
Details of Mangano?s newly-announced Deficit Reduction Plan include reducing the County workforce, which has already endured a round of recent lay-offs, by an additional 200 positions; slashing capital improvement projects; canceling non-mandated contracts and departmental purchases; and ceasing evening hours at the Nassau County Department of Social Services and Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency.?
Previous efforts by Mangano and the Republican Legislative Majority to reduce the extensive deficit have included cutting the County?s workforce by 20%, including more than 100 positions; implementing two public-private partnerships, including one with Nassau?s bus system and another which brought inmate healthcare services to the County jail; consolidating 10 County departments; creating energy efficiencies; and implementing operational cost-saving actions.
